Amazon Breaks Ground on Massive Robotics Fulfilment Centre in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Amazon held a groundbreaking ceremony on November 4, 2026, for a 2.2-million-square-foot robotics fulfilment centre in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The facility, expected to open in 2029, will create more than 1,000 full-time jobs and represents an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Amazon held a groundbreaking ceremony on November 4, 2026, for a new warehouse in the Halifax area. The facility is located in the Burnside Industrial Park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and will cover more than 200,000 square metres, or approximately 2.2 million square feet.

The project is a "Generation 14" robotics fulfilment centre, described as the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada and the largest east of Ontario. It is scheduled to open in 2029 and is expected to create more than 1,000 full-time jobs upon completion.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston and Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Brooks Barnett, head of economic development at Amazon Canada, stated that the investment is in the "hundreds of millions of dollars." Barnett also highlighted the role of Halifax's port and workforce in the site selection process.

Construction of the massive facility requires blasting more than one million cubic metres of rock from the site. During the event, Amazon announced a $50,000 donation to Upward Mobility Kitchens, which will provide 10,000 community meals.

The announcement follows Amazon's decision in January 2026 to close all seven of its Quebec warehouses, eliminating 1,700 permanent and 250 temporary jobs. Since 2010, Amazon has invested more than $65 billion in its Canadian operations, maintaining a workforce of over 46,000 people across more than 60 sites in the country.
