Incoming German Submarine Fleet Brings Opportunities and Workforce Challenges to Halifax
Babcock Canada representative Martin MacCorquodale says the planned acquisition of up to 12 German TKMS submarines will require significant workforce expansion and years of educational preparation in Halifax, which is expected to serve as a maintenance hub for the new fleet.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced last July that Germany’s TKMS would supply Canada with up to 12 submarines, with the first four deliveries expected to arrive by 2034. The incoming fleet presents both opportunities and challenges for Halifax, according to Martin MacCorquodale of Babcock Canada.

Halifax is anticipated to play a central role in maintaining the new vessels. The Royal Canadian Navy has expressed interest in designating the city as the hub for the future submarine fleet. Babcock Canada currently employs 60 people in Halifax to support the existing submarine fleet, but MacCorquodale stated that local capacity needs to expand significantly to accommodate the new platforms.
Building the necessary workforce will not happen overnight. MacCorquodale emphasized that preparing for the expanded fleet requires years of developing curricula and schooling to ensure workers are ready to support the submarines once they arrive.

The planned expansion is expected to create opportunities for local Nova Scotians, though it also underscores the long-term educational and curriculum planning required to meet the demands of the new fleet.
