Nova Scotia Man Charged with 14 Offences After Emergency Alert in Colchester County
Stephen Joseph Maloney, 35, of Belmont, N.S., faces 14 charges including breaking and entering and firearm offences after an incident that prompted a shelter-in-place alert.
A 35-year-old man from Belmont, Nova Scotia, has been charged with 14 offences following an incident that triggered an emergency alert in Colchester County. Stephen Joseph Maloney was arrested on Friday after police responded to reports of an attempted break-in.
The incident began when police received a report of an unwanted man attempting to break into a residence on Lightbody Road in Belmont. According to authorities, the suspect arrived in a black Mazda sedan and allegedly broke a window at the home using what may have been a rifle before leaving without entering the property.
Police located Maloney’s vehicle around 11:00 a.m. in the 900 block of Belmont Road. Shortly after, at approximately 11:40 a.m., an emergency alert was issued instructing residents in Colchester County to shelter in place. Officers subsequently arrested Maloney at around 1:20 p.m.
The specific charges against Maloney include breaking and entering with intent, mischief, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized firearm possession, prohibited or restricted firearm possession with ammunition, careless use of a firearm, and seven counts of failure to comply with a release order.
Maloney remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Truro on Monday.
