Canada Launches $1.5 Billion Rental Protection Fund to Preserve Affordable Housing
The Government of Canada has launched the Canada Rental Protection Fund, a $1.5 billion initiative managed by Build Canada Homes. The Canadian Housing Acquisition Fund was selected to deploy investments aimed at protecting 7,000 at-risk rental homes over five years.
On September 22, 2026, the Government of Canada announced the launch of the Canada Rental Protection Fund (CRPF), a significant federal initiative designed to preserve affordable rental housing across the country. Managed by Build Canada Homes (BCH), the fund is supported by a $1.5 billion federal investment.

The Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, announced the selection of the Canadian Housing Acquisition Fund (CHAF) as the successful applicant to deploy these investments. CHAF was chosen through an open call for applications and will work with community housing providers to acquire and renew at-risk affordable rental properties.
Established in Budget 2024, the CRPF aims to protect existing affordable rental housing from being converted to market rates or demolished. According to the government, the initiative has the potential to protect 7,000 at-risk rental homes over the fund's first five years.
The Canadian Housing Acquisition Fund brings together several key organizations. Its founding members include the Canadian Housing Renewal Association, The National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Inc., the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada, and the BC Rental Protection Fund. These partners are expected to strengthen community ownership and support long-term affordability while mobilizing additional investment from charitable and private sectors.
