On October 16, 2026, the Government of Canada announced a total federal investment of $30 million in Hitachi Energy Canada Inc. to support a $478.8 million project establishing Canada’s first electrical-grade pressboard manufacturing facility in London, Ontario.
Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, made the announcement. The $30 million federal contribution consists of $20 million through the Strategic Response Fund and $10 million through the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program.
The new facility will produce up to 20,000 tonnes annually of electrical-grade pressboard and laminated insulation materials for high-voltage transformers. It is set to supply transformer manufacturing operations in Varennes, Quebec, as well as other manufacturers in North American and global markets.
As part of the project, Hitachi Energy plans to maintain its existing workforce of approximately 1,250 employees and grow its Canadian workforce to 1,765 employees. The expansion will create more than 100 new jobs at the London facility.
