Canada’s Privacy Commissioner has launched an investigation into a data breach at IDScan.net, a company that provides identification verification software to businesses such as bars, casinos, and car rental companies. The breach potentially exposed details from millions of driver's licences and government-issued IDs from both Canada and the United States.
IDScan.net published a public notice stating that an unauthorized third party may have accessed or copied customer information stored within their accounts on the IDScan.net cloud. The company is currently notifying potentially affected individuals and offering free credit monitoring services.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed it is looking into the reported theft of tens of millions of driver's licences belonging to people in the U.S. and Canada. Reports indicate that the stolen data was being sold on the dark net.
Zach Edwards, a threat researcher at Infoblox, described the incident as unprecedented in scale. He stated that there has never been a breach of driver's licences at this level and noted that it creates national security risks for high-profile individuals.
