Cape Breton Fire Departments Accepting Applications for Free Smoke Alarm Installations

Homeowners in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality who cannot afford smoke alarms can now apply for free devices and installation through a program running until Oct. 31.

Fire departments in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) are accepting applications from homeowners who need smoke alarms but cannot afford them. The initiative, which is in its second year, runs from Thursday through Oct. 31. Residents can apply online.

Under the program, firefighters will install one smoke alarm on each floor of a home that has a bedroom. They will also provide safety information to residents during the visit. In 2025, the program provided 258 smoke alarms to homes across the municipality.

The effort comes amid national data highlighting the risks associated with missing or non-functioning fire detection equipment. According to Statistics Canada, there are roughly 220 fire-related deaths each year in Canada. That figure is based on an analysis of a 10-year period between 2011 and 2020. The data also indicates that at least one in seven unintentional residential fire-related deaths involved homes without a working smoke alarm.
