Carney Government Announces $2 Billion Home Retrofit Program to Support One Million Upgrades
Prime Minister Mark Carney's government has unveiled a $2 billion home retrofit program expected to launch next year, offering rebates of up to $10,000 for electric heat pumps and funding energy efficiency upgrades for 280,000 apartment units over eight years.
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government announced on Thursday a new $2 billion rebate program designed to help Canadians adopt electric heat pumps and improve home energy efficiency. The initiative is expected to roll out next year.

The government has earmarked the funds to provide grants for heat pumps and to assist apartment building owners in retrofitting 280,000 units over the next eight years. In total, the measures are projected to support one million retrofits across Canada.
According to the government, the program aims to reduce Canada’s emissions by more than 25 million metric tonnes, an amount equivalent to taking nearly 8.5 million cars off the road for a year.
Under the plan, eligible below-median income households will receive a rebate of up to $10,000 for the purchase of a heat pump. Other households not classified as below-median income will receive a rebate of $2,000.

The announcement follows a similar program adopted in 2022 under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, which stopped accepting applications this summer.
