Halifax Regional Municipality to Build Emergency Egress Road in Westwood Hills
The Halifax Regional Municipality plans to construct a 500-metre gated gravel road connecting Westwood Boulevard to Highway 103, providing an emergency-only egress route for the Westwood Hills community. Construction is scheduled from early October to late December 2026.

The Halifax Regional Municipality has announced plans to build a new emergency egress route in the Westwood Hills community. The project will establish a connection between Westwood Boulevard and Highway 103, creating a gated link between the subdivision and the provincial highway network.
Construction is anticipated to begin in early October 2026 and be completed by late December 2026. Work hours are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Some final aspects of the project, such as restoration work, may take place in spring 2027.
The new access road will be an approximately 500-metre-long gravel road measuring about 8 metres wide. Construction activities include site preparation, grading, rock excavation, limited blasting if necessary, and the installation of a gated entrance.
During the project, residents can expect increased construction-related traffic, temporary stop-and-go traffic, and lane reductions.

Upon completion, the route will remain closed to regular traffic and is not intended for day-to-day public use. In emergencies, authorized municipal staff and emergency responders will open the route to support operations and community evacuation.
The project supports the Strengthening Communities and Moving Better priorities outlined in the municipality's 2026–2030 Strategic Plan.
