Dartmouth man charged with child luring following RCMP online investigation

Matthew Gavin Smith, 52, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, faces a child luring charge after the RCMP investigated reports of sexual communication with a youth online. Police seized electronic evidence from his home and believe there may be additional victims.

A 52-year-old man from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, has been charged with luring a child following an online investigation by the RCMP.

The RCMP launched the investigation earlier this month after receiving a report that a man had communicated online with a youth for a sexual purpose.

On Tuesday, members of the Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Unit and RCMP Digital Forensics Services executed a search warrant at a residence on Viscaya Place in Dartmouth. Officers seized electronic evidence during the search.

Matthew Gavin Smith was subsequently charged with luring a child. He was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 2.

Police believe additional victims may have been targeted online. Authorities are urging parents and guardians to speak with their children about online safety.
