Nova Scotia's First Data Centre Proposal Sparks Debate Over Resources and Transparency
EverWind Fuels has proposed building Nova Scotia's first data centre in Point Tupper, drawing mixed reactions from local leaders who see economic potential but demand strict scrutiny, and critics who cite a lack of transparency regarding water usage.
EverWind Fuels has confirmed plans to construct a data centre on its property in Point Tupper, just outside Port Hawkesbury, N.S. If approved, the facility would be Nova Scotia's first data centre.
The proposal has generated mixed reactions across the region. Richmond County Warden Lois Landry stated that EverWind informed the municipality of its intentions approximately two weeks prior to the news report. While acknowledging the potential for economic benefits, particularly for aging infrastructure, Landry emphasized the need for rigorous regulatory oversight.
Landry expressed hope that guidelines shared by Premier Tim Houston, federal strategies, and municipal bylaws will ensure proper scrutiny of the project. She also argued that Nova Scotia's cooler climate naturally reduces cooling demands compared to warmer regions like Texas, supporting the feasibility of closed-loop cooling systems.
Port Hawkesbury Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton stated she needs time to consult with town council before taking an official stance on the proposal.
However, critics have raised concerns about the opacity of the project. Jessica Cheung, a campaigner for The Council of Canadians, criticized the lack of information from EverWind regarding the data centre's size, AI usage, and water consumption. Cheung highlighted that residential customers in Point Tupper and Port Hawkesbury face a 20 per cent yearly water rate increase for the next three years, while EverWind pays a flat rate of $74,000 for untreated water.
Cheung also noted a shift in provincial policy, pointing out that Premier Tim Houston previously stated in June that no more AI data funding would be available until certain conditions were met.
