An 18-year-old man from Prospect Bay died at the scene of a crash in Grand Pré, Nova Scotia, early Sunday morning. Four other people were injured when the grey Honda Civic they were travelling in went over an embankment on Highway 1 around 1:53 a.m.
The incident began approximately three minutes earlier, around 1:50 a.m., when a police officer spotted the speeding vehicle in downtown Wolfville and attempted to pull the driver over. The driver did not stop and sped toward Grand Pré. During the attempt to stop the Honda, a police officer crashed their vehicle just outside Wolfville and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Honda ultimately left the road and went over an embankment. One passenger in the vehicle was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Three other occupants were transported to hospital by ambulance or Emergency Health Services (EHS).
Kings District RCMP are investigating the crash, and an RCMP collision reconstructionist attended both crash locations. The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), Nova Scotia's police watchdog, is reviewing the incident to determine if it falls within its jurisdiction regarding police conduct.
