Three-Alarm Fire at Halifax Grain Elevator Contained After Complex High-Rise Operation
A fire located 135 feet above ground at the Halifax Grain Elevator was brought under control Monday night following a three-alarm response by Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency. Crews used drones to navigate access challenges, and the cause remains under investigation.
Fire crews responded around 7:15 p.m. on Monday night to reports of visible flames at the Halifax Grain Elevator in the city’s south end. The incident required a three-alarm response from Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency (HRFE), with approximately 20 firefighting and support vehicles and pieces of equipment deployed to the scene.

The fire was contained to the south conveyor system’s dust handling equipment and hopper infrastructure. Flames were located 135 feet above the ground, presenting significant access and tactical considerations for responding personnel. The Halifax Regional Municipality described the event as a "complex incident" due to the significant heights involved and a docked vessel alongside the facility.
To assist with the operation, fire crews used drones to help overcome the access challenges posed by the height and the nearby vessel. Coordinated efforts between HRFE crews and facility representatives prevented the fire from spreading to surrounding structures.
The fire was declared under control at around 10:30 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
