Canada Invests $1.98 Million in Halifax Gun and Gang Violence Prevention

This federal investment is delivered through the Building Safer Communities Fund (BSCF). The BSCF provides funding to municipalities and Indigenous communities to support locally designed prevention and intervention initiatives that address the root causes of gun and gang violence. The goal is to provide children, youth, and young adults with opportunities to avoid involvement with guns and gangs, while strengthening community connections and making communities safer.
Mayor Andy Fillmore of the Halifax Regional Municipality commented on the investment's role in strengthening partnerships and community capacity. Deputy Chief Andrew Matthews of Halifax Regional Police stated that investing in people from an early age helps create pathways away from crime.
This announcement follows a March 2026 renewal of the BSCF, which provided $157.5 million over three years. The fund was initially established with $250 million in March 2022. Over the past 10 years, the Government of Canada has invested $1.5 billion to strengthen law enforcement and gang prevention programs.
