WestJet and Icelandair Drop Three European Routes from Halifax Airport for 2027

WestJet and Icelandair are discontinuing non-stop flights from Halifax Stanfield International Airport to Madrid, Copenhagen, and Reykjavík for the 2027 season due to insufficient demand. Despite the cancellations, the airport expects record passenger numbers this year and ongoing negotiations could add new destinations.

WestJet and Icelandair will not operate non-stop flights from Halifax Stanfield International Airport to Madrid, Copenhagen, and Reykjavík during the 2027 season. The decision to drop the three European routes was based on demand not being sufficient to keep them going.

WestJet is not bringing back its flights to Madrid and Copenhagen, while Icelandair is dropping its crossing to Reykjavík. Despite losing these connections, there are still 12 European destinations available from Halifax.

The route reductions come as the airport experiences record high passenger traffic. Strong usage of flights to Europe, the Caribbean, and Mexico has driven the numbers upward. Halifax Stanfield International Airport is projecting about 4.4 million passengers by the end of this year.

Officials expect passenger numbers to remain relatively flat next year, staying around 4.5 million. Negotiations are taking place that could lead to other cities being added for next season.
