The Halifax Regional Municipality has announced a series of service adjustments for Remembrance Day, which falls on Wednesday, Nov. 11. The changes affect waste collection, public transit, recreation facilities, and customer services across the municipality.
There will be no garbage, organics, or recyclables collection on Nov. 11. Curbside collection normally scheduled for that day will instead take place on Nov. 14. Residents must place materials curbside prior to 7 a.m. on their collection day to guarantee pickup. The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility and Materials Recovery Facility will be closed on Nov. 11 but will reopen on Nov. 14. The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake will be closed on Nov. 14; it will be open on Nov. 7 and Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Halifax Transit is offering free rides on Remembrance Day to all veterans, military personnel, and their accompanying family members. To use the free transit service, veterans and military personnel must be in uniform or display military identification. At 11 a.m., Halifax Transit buses will pull over to observe three minutes of silence. Buses and the Alderney Ferry service will operate on holiday schedules throughout the day, while the Woodside Ferry service will not operate.
Most municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Nov. 11. On-street paid parking will be free for the day. The 311 Contact Centre and in-person Customer Service Centres will also be closed on Nov. 11, reopening with regular hours on Nov. 12.
Remembrance Day ceremonies are organized by the Royal Canadian Legion.
