Halifax Announces Service Adjustments for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The Halifax Regional Municipality has outlined changes to municipal services for Wednesday, September 30, in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. While solid waste collection remains unchanged, transit schedules will be adjusted, and several facilities will close.
The Halifax Regional Municipality announced service level adjustments for Wednesday, September 30, in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Residents are advised to check specific schedules as some services will operate on holiday hours while others remain closed.
Transit and Ferry Services
Halifax Transit buses and the Alderney Ferry will operate on holiday service schedules. The Alderney Ferry will run at a half-hour frequency, with the first trip departing from the Alderney Ferry Terminal at 7:30 a.m. and the final trip leaving the Halifax Ferry Terminal at 11:45 p.m. However, there will be no Woodside Ferry service on this day.
In a gesture of remembrance, all buses will pull over at 2:15 p.m. for a moment of silence in memory of residential school children, survivors, families, and communities.
Municipal Facilities and Customer Service
All municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Wednesday, September 30. Additionally, in-person Customer Service Centres will not be open. The 311 Contact Centre will also be closed for full service, though urgent calls can still be reported during the day. Regular operating hours for both the 311 Contact Centre and Customer Service Centres will resume on Thursday, October 1.
Waste Collection and Parking
Solid waste collection services and facility hours remain unchanged on Wednesday, September 30. For those needing to dispose of special household items, a mobile Household Special Waste Depot is being held on Saturday, September 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the NSCC Institute of Technology Campus (Halifax). The permanent Household Special Waste Depot at 20 Horseshoe Lake Drive will also be open on Saturday, September 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On-street paid parking will be free throughout the city on Wednesday, September 30.
