Halifax Transit Launches Accessibility Campaign and New Instagram Account

Halifax Transit has introduced the Transit Code Accessibility campaign to promote inclusive transit for residents of all abilities, coinciding with the launch of its new Instagram account @hfxtransitofficial.

Halifax Transit has launched the Transit Code Accessibility campaign as part of its work to support the Transit Code. The initiative aims to create an inclusive and welcoming experience for residents of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds across the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The campaign defines accessible transit as supporting independence, community connection, and safe, comfortable travel with dignity. It features stories of riders with accessibility needs and raises awareness of available support services to promote a safe, courteous, and respectful transit environment.

Highlighted accessibility features include Access-A-Bus, fully accessible buses and ferries, audio and visual stop announcements, boarding ramps, kneeling buses, priority seating, and accessible bus stop standards. The campaign also draws attention to support programs such as Travel Training, Request-A-Stop, the Personal Care Attendants Policy, and accommodation for service animals.

Development of the campaign was informed by public engagement conducted earlier this year, which included a survey and a community workshop regarding conventional bus, Access-A-Bus, and ferry services. Improving accessibility is identified as a key priority in the municipality’s 2026-2030 Strategic Plan and its 2025-2028 Accessibility Strategy.
