Halifax Transit Launches Tap & Ride and Fare Capping in HFXGO App
Halifax Transit has introduced new features to the HFXGO mobile app, including a Tap & Ride barcode for automatic fare deduction and fare capping limits of $7.50 per day or $90 per month for adults.
Halifax Transit has rolled out significant updates to its HFXGO mobile application, introducing a "Tap & Ride" feature that allows passengers to pay fares on buses and ferries using a digital barcode. This new system automatically deducts funds from the user's account balance, eliminating the need to purchase individual tickets for each trip.
Alongside the payment convenience, the update includes fare capping protections. Adult riders are now guaranteed not to pay more than $7.50 per day or $90 per month. These caps also apply to seniors who self-identify within the app and to users of Regional Express services. It is important to note that fare capping only applies to trips made using the Tap & Ride barcode; individual tickets purchased through the app do not count toward these daily or monthly limits.
The launch follows a decision by Halifax council on July 14 to delay planned transit fare increases. The delay was prompted by reports that the separate tap-to-pay system, which allows payments via credit cards, debit cards, and mobile wallets, would not be ready until December. The tap-to-pay system had originally been scheduled to launch on September 21.
