Halifax Police Arrest Suspect in Series of Antisemitic Hate Crimes
Gezim Topalli, 31, has been charged with multiple counts related to a series of six antisemitic graffiti incidents that targeted synagogues and sidewalks in central Halifax over the weekend.
Halifax Regional Police have arrested and charged a suspect following an investigation into a series of hate crimes that occurred over the weekend. The incidents involved racist graffiti defacing religious property and public spaces in central Halifax.
Police responded to six separate incidents on Sunday morning. In three of these cases, the graffiti was written directly on synagogues, while the other three instances involved messages scrawled on nearby sidewalks. All events took place within the central Halifax area.
Following the investigation, officers arrested Gezim Topalli, 31, at his residence in Halifax. He faces several charges, including three counts of Mischief related to religious property, three counts of Property damage, and one count of Public Incitement of Hatred.
During the active phase of the investigation, Halifax Regional Police increased patrols around synagogues and other religious buildings to ensure community safety.
Halifax Regional Police Chief Don MacLean emphasized that hatred is not tolerated in the municipality. He credited the swift collaboration between law enforcement and the community for helping identify the suspect. The arrest marks a significant development in the case, which had prompted heightened security measures across the city's religious sites.
