Explosion and Fire at CFB Wainwright Kill at Least Seven, Injure Dozens
A live-fire training exercise triggered an explosion and massive fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday, killing at least seven people and injuring dozens. High winds pushed the blaze beyond the base perimeter, overwhelming local health facilities and prompting a disaster response in Edmonton.
An explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in east-central Alberta killed at least seven people and injured dozens more on Saturday, October 18, according to military sources cited by Global News. Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed that fatalities and injuries resulted from the incident but did not specify exact numbers.

The incident began around 4 p.m. MT during a live-fire training exercise when munitions reportedly struck a gas line or gas well, triggering an explosion and subsequent fire. CFB Wainwright, located approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, is described as the principal base for live-fire training exercises and regularly hosts about 690 military personnel and 300 civilian workers.
High winds rapidly spread the fire across the base fence into the surrounding Municipal District of Wainwright. CBC meteorologists reported wind gusts reaching 69 km/h, while Global News reported gusts up to 100 km/h. During the event, temperatures dropped from 23C to 13C within one hour.
Local health facilities were quickly overwhelmed by the volume of patients. A "code orange" disaster response protocol was activated in Edmonton hospitals to handle the influx of individuals transported from Wainwright. Emergency coordination centres were established to manage the response, and neighbouring provinces Saskatchewan and British Columbia offered resources and assistance to Alberta.

The emergency also disrupted civic activities in the area. Elections Alberta closed the advance polling station at the Wainwright Communiplex, which had been set up for a provincial referendum, due to the fire.
