Halifax Launches Financing Program for Home Energy Upgrades
The Halifax Regional Municipality has introduced the HalifACT Home Energy Upgrade program, offering financing and support to eligible homeowners of older oil-heated properties to improve energy efficiency.
The Halifax Regional Municipality has launched the HalifACT Home Energy Upgrade (HHEU) program, a new initiative designed to help homeowners reduce energy costs and improve comfort in their residences. This program is part of HalifACT, the municipality’s broader climate action plan aimed at reducing emissions, improving affordability, and strengthening communities.
The HHEU program provides eligible participants with access to financing and navigation services, including technical support, to complete various energy-saving upgrades. Qualifying improvements may include the installation of insulation, heat pumps, and electric hot water heaters.
To be eligible for the program, homeowners must own residential properties built before the year 2000 that are currently heated with oil. Applicants must also be in good financial standing. A key requirement for participation is that the home must be capable of achieving at least a 50 per cent reduction in energy use through the proposed upgrades.
Prospective participants are required to undergo a home energy assessment to determine eligibility. This assessment typically costs approximately $200.
Financing for the upgrades is provided directly by the municipality, with repayment terms set over a ten-year period. The program is limited in scope, with financing available for approximately 100 homes.
