Canada Announces $520 Million to Accelerate Jasper Rebuilding After Wildfires
The Government of Canada has announced an additional $520 million in funding to speed up the reconstruction of Jasper National Park and the town of Jasper. The announcement, made by Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne on June 30, 2026, builds on previous recovery efforts following the devastating wildfires of summer 2024.
On June 30, 2026, Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne announced a new federal investment of $520 million to accelerate the rebuilding of Jasper National Park and the town of Jasper in Alberta. The announcement was made in Jasper, with Minister Eleanor Olszewski, Mayor Richard Ireland, and Andrew Campbell, Interim President and CEO of Parks Canada, also present.
This funding is intended to restore damaged park infrastructure, including front country campgrounds, staff housing, grounds, utilities buildings, highways, and roadways. It will also support the completion of fire risk reduction measures for the townsite and perimeter, and expedite overall reconstruction efforts.
The wildfires that struck in the summer of 2024 burned approximately 32,700 hectares and destroyed 30 percent of structures in the town of Jasper. In the national park itself, an estimated 20 per cent of total assets were damaged or destroyed.
Prior to this latest announcement, the federal government had already delivered more than $385 million over the past two years for response and recovery efforts. These previous funds helped provide interim housing for over 415 families and ensured that debris was removed from 100 percent of affected lots. Currently, construction is actively underway at 118 properties as part of the ongoing rebuilding process.
The new $520 million investment will continue to provide interim housing for displaced Jasper residents through March 2028. The government states that this accelerated funding aims to support economic recovery and tourism in the region while restoring essential facilities for both residents and visitors.
