Nova Scotia Liberal Party Proposes Ban on Energy Drink Sales to Children Under 16
Nova Scotia Liberal interim leader Iain Rankin has introduced legislation to prohibit the sale of energy drinks to children under 16, citing health risks and following similar moves by Quebec and the United Kingdom.
The Nova Scotia Liberal Party has put forward a bill that would ban children under the age of 16 from purchasing energy drinks. Interim leader Iain Rankin introduced the measure, pointing to health concerns raised by medical experts and noting that Quebec recently became the first jurisdiction in North America to enact a similar prohibition.
Rankin cited a cause of death in Quebec linked to mixing energy drinks with medication as part of the rationale for the proposed ban. The initiative aligns with actions taken in other regions, as Dr. Fraser Mackay noted that the United Kingdom has also banned the sale of energy drinks to youth.
Dr. Mackay, an emergency room physician, supports the ban, highlighting the potential dangers associated with high caffeine consumption among young people. Energy drinks contain an average of 100 to 300 milligrams of caffeine. According to Dr. Mackay, high-dose repetitive consumption of caffeine impacts blood pressure, heart rate, and sleep cycles. He warned that these factors can lead to anxiety, sleep deprivation, cardiac issues, and toxicity.
The physician further explained that combining energy drinks with alcohol or stimulant medications can result in cumulative additive effects, increasing agitation and anxiety in young people. These interactions pose significant risks, including potential long-term health harms such as headaches and severe sleep disruption.
Current provincial school policies already restrict the availability of these beverages on educational grounds. The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) follows provincial standards identifying energy drinks as beverages that do not align with Canada’s Food Guide and should not be sold or served at school. Similarly, Conseil Scolaire Acadien Provincial adheres to this policy regarding energy drinks in schools.
