The new emergency department at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, officially opened at 6 a.m. on Wednesday. The opening marks the first phase of a broader hospital redevelopment project.

A celebration event was held on Tuesday to recognize the new emergency department, along with a new renal dialysis unit and expanded endoscopy spaces. According to Nova Scotia Health, the renal dialysis unit and endoscopy services are slated to open later this month as part of the redevelopment’s phased opening. The new spaces are intended to allow for improved patient care across emergency, renal dialysis, and endoscopy services.
More than $10.8 million was raised through the South Shore Health Foundation’s Brighter Days campaign to support the hospital redevelopment. Work continues on the project to repurpose former spaces around the hospital. The transition to the new work areas aims to minimize disruption for patients and families during the ongoing changes.
