Fence erected around downtown Halifax park following shooting and safety concerns
Halifax Regional Municipality officials have installed a fence around a downtown park between Barrington Street and Amalamek Way to address overnight safety risks, including a July 12 shooting. A community garden and fencing beautification are planned for the space, which was created through the $138.1-million Cogswell District project.
A new fence has been erected around a downtown Halifax park located between Barrington Street and Amalamek Way near Casino Nova Scotia.
Halifax Regional Municipality spokesperson Laura Wright stated the fencing was added to mitigate community safety risks during overnight hours. Neighbours had identified safety concerns over several months that included violent incidents, anti-social behaviours, and threatening behaviours.
The decision follows a shooting on July 12 in which an assailant shot a 39-year-old man sitting in the park. The victim survived with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police responded to the incident at approximately 1:10 a.m. in the 2100 block of Amalamek Way. The suspect fled the area on a motorized scooter before police arrived.
The park is located across the street from Metro Turning Point Centre, a 24-hour emergency homeless shelter.
The green space evolved from the Cogswell District project, which replaced an old interchange with new streets and infrastructure. The bulk of the $138.1-million undertaking was completed in December 2025, with finishing touches scheduled for early 2026.
A community garden is planned for the fenced park space. Beautification of the fencing is also planned through a community project to enhance the location.
