Nova Scotia Enforces New E-Bike and E-Scooter Rules Starting Oct. 19

New Traffic Safety Act rules in Nova Scotia require e-bike and e-scooter riders to be over 14 and follow a 32 km/h speed limit. Police will prioritize education but may issue tickets, seize vehicles, or contact parents of minors who violate the law.

New rules under the Traffic Safety Act governing e-bikes and e-scooters went into effect in Nova Scotia on Oct. 19. Under the updated regulations, riders must be over 14 years of age to operate an e-bike or e-scooter, and the speed limit for these devices is set at 32 km/h. Editorial illustration

Halifax Regional Police stated that violators could face tickets or have their bikes or scooters seized. However, police emphasize an educational approach to enforcement before issuing penalties.

For younger riders found breaking the law, authorities have outlined specific measures. Parents or guardians may be contacted if minors are found violating the law. Nova Scotia RCMP Cpl. Carlie McCann noted that RCMP officers can verify ages without ID by using other means, such as contacting parents or guardians. Editorial illustration
