CBSA to Restore Two-Year Deadline for NEXUS Enrolment Interviews Starting April 2027

The Canada Border Services Agency announced that beginning April 1, 2027, conditionally approved NEXUS applicants will have two years to schedule their enrolment interviews, replacing the temporary five-year window introduced during the pandemic. Applicants approved before that date retain the longer deadline or until April 1, 2029, whichever comes first.

Starting April 1, 2027, NEXUS applicants who receive conditional approval will have up to two years to schedule an enrolment interview, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced. This change replaces the current five-year scheduling window, which was implemented as a temporary measure due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CBSA cited improved enrolment interview capacity since the pandemic as the reason for reverting to the original two-year time limit. Applications expire if the applicable timelines for scheduling interviews are exceeded.

Applicants who are conditionally approved before April 1, 2027, will keep the five-year limit, provided they schedule an interview within that timeframe or by April 1, 2029, whichever is earlier. The CBSA advises current applicants waiting for interviews to book promptly to prevent application expiration.

NEXUS is a joint program run by the CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) designed to speed up border processing for low-risk travellers between Canada and the United States. Memberships are valid for five years. Members over 18 must pay a non-refundable US$120 processing fee, while those under 18 apply for free.

Before a NEXUS card is issued, interviews must be conducted with both the CBSA and USCBP agencies. The CBSA portion of the interview occurs at an enrolment centre, while the USCBP portion can take place at a CBP centre or via Enrolment on Arrival.
