Nova Scotia Energy Board Lowers Regular Gasoline Prices Using Interrupter Clause
The Nova Scotia Energy Board used its interrupter clause to lower the minimum price of regular gasoline in Zone 1 by 5.4 cents per litre, effective September 30, 2026, amid significant market shifts linked to U.S. military action against Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Nova Scotia Energy Board announced on September 29, 2026, that it would use the interrupter clause to adjust prices for regular and mid-grade gasoline, with the changes taking effect at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. The board stated the price changes were necessary due to significant shifts in market prices.
Prior to the adjustment, the minimum price of regular gasoline in Nova Scotia was 199.1 cents per litre. As of September 30, 2026, the minimum price in Zone 1 — which includes Halifax, Hants County, and part of Colchester County — is 193.7 cents per litre. This represents a decrease of 5.4 cents per litre from the previous update. Premium gasoline and diesel prices remained unchanged.
Factors contributing to fluctuating prices included the U.S. bombing of Iran and the closing of the Strait of Hormuz. On September 29, 2026, the price of Brent crude dropped by more than two cents but remained 55 per cent higher than the previous year.
