Nova Scotia Eliminates Annual Reapplication for Zero Per Cent Student Loan Interest Program

Nova Scotia graduates no longer need to reapply each year to keep their provincial student loans interest-free. The change, announced April 14, 2026, simplifies the zero per cent interest program and ensures continuous support for eligible borrowers who remain in the province.

Nova Scotia has removed the annual reapplication requirement for its zero per cent interest program on provincial student loans, a change that took effect as of April 14, 2026. Graduates will no longer need to submit yearly applications to maintain interest-free status during their repayment period.

The updated process applies to all new graduates and is designed to ensure continuous support for eligible borrowers. The program specifically supports graduates who remain in Nova Scotia after completing their studies.

Brendan Maguire, Minister of Advanced Education, stated that removing the reapplication requirement makes the program simpler and more reliable. People currently repaying provincial loans were recently notified of the change by email.

The Province of Nova Scotia eliminated interest on its student loans in 2014. That policy has saved graduates more than $2 million annually. In the 2024-25 period, more than 7,000 Nova Scotia student loan borrowers accessed the zero per cent interest program.

Brendan Roberts, Executive Director of Students Nova Scotia, described the announcement as a positive step towards supporting graduates and reducing administrative burden.

The initiative aligns with broader provincial efforts to reduce red tape and improve service delivery. By eliminating the annual paperwork, the change prevents interruptions in financial assistance and allows graduates to focus on paying down debt rather than filling out applications.
