Halifax Regional Police responded to a swatting incident at Halifax West High School on Thursday, October 8, after receiving a threat call that prompted a full lockdown of the building.
At approximately 12:25 p.m., a man called the school claiming to be on the property with a weapon. The school immediately went into lockdown, triggering a significant police response. Const. Martin Cromwell stated that police respond with "all hands on deck" to such threats until they can determine otherwise.
Dylan Bugdal, a Grade 12 student, reported seeing police cars everywhere and hearing rumors upon returning from lunch. Officers searched the school and found no evidence to support the threat. The lockdown was lifted at 3:45 p.m.
Investigators determined that the initial call was made from outside of Canada and was a hoax. Law enforcement agencies in Florida assisted in tracing the call. No charges have been laid at this stage, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Lindsey Bunin, a spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, confirmed the district is working with police and prioritizing safety. Officers returned to the school on Friday to reassure students and staff.
