Weekend Road Work at Windsor Street Exchange to Cause Delays on Bedford Highway

Construction at the Windsor Street Exchange in Halifax will reduce lanes and cause traffic delays on the Bedford Highway from Friday evening until Monday morning. The work is part of a $180 million infrastructure project expected to be completed by late 2029.

During the construction period, two-way traffic will be maintained on the Bedford Highway, but drivers should expect lane reductions in both directions and resulting traffic delays.

The current construction facilitates the building of a detour road that will support future phases of the Windsor Street Exchange project. Mayor Andy Fillmore announced this phase of the project in July, urging citizens to remain patient despite expected delays and frustration.

The Windsor Street Exchange Project is a $180-million infrastructure upgrade. Roughly 48,000 vehicles travel through the intersection each day, making it a significant chokepoint in the city's transportation network. Editorial illustration

The project design prioritizes travel between the Bedford Highway and the MacKay bridge to support inbound transit, port-related goods movement, and high-volume vehicle traffic. Upon completion, the upgrade is intended to improve overall efficiency for heavily travelled movements, enhance safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and those using mobility devices, and allow for faster and easier movement of goods and people.

The estimated finish date for the Windsor Street Exchange project is late 2029.
