Hockey Nova Scotia Warns Minor Hockey Teams of Tournament Registration Scam
Hockey Nova Scotia and the Chebucto Minor Hockey Association are warning local teams about a phishing scam that uses fake tournament registration invites to steal fees ranging from $800 to $2,000.
Hockey Nova Scotia and the Halifax-area Chebucto Minor Hockey Association are warning local minor hockey teams about a phishing scam involving fraudulent tournament registration invitations.
The scammers spoof legitimate tournament names, logos, and email addresses, and use copies of real registration forms to make their solicitations appear authentic. Bryan Esbaugh, president of the Chebucto Minor Hockey Association, stated that someone spoofed their Kyle Henneberry Memorial Tournament. The association was contacted by another organization that had registered for the event through a fraudulent website.
Tournament registration costs targeted by the scam range from $800 to $2,000. Victims may make travel plans only to find out last minute that they did not secure a spot because the registration was fraudulent, potentially leaving them unable to recover the funds.
This incident follows a similar warning issued last week by Hockey Alberta regarding comparable scams targeting teams in that province.
Hockey Nova Scotia recommends that teams contact tournament hosts directly using organizer emails listed on official websites rather than relying on email addresses received in unsolicited solicitations.
