Sentencing Hearing Begins for Kenneth Law, Who Pleaded Guilty to Aiding 14 Suicides
A sentencing hearing is underway in Newmarket, Ontario, for Kenneth Law, who pleaded guilty to counselling or aiding 14 suicides. The court heard emotional victim impact statements from families of the deceased, including parents of Jeshennia Bedoya-Lopez and the sister of Maurizio Vadala. A statement from a British mother was partially redacted by agreement between prosecutors and defence. Law showed no visible emotion during the proceedings.
A sentencing hearing is currently taking place in a packed courtroom in Newmarket, Ontario, for Kenneth Law. Law pleaded guilty in May to counselling or aiding 14 suicides in Ontario. He admitted to running websites that sold suicide paraphernalia to vulnerable people who later died.
The hearing, presided over by Superior Court Justice Michelle Fuerst, is expected to last several days. On September 23, Law sat in the prisoner's box showing no response or emotion as impact statements were read.
Victim impact statements included accounts from the families of those who died. Maurizio Vadala, 36, was found dead on the couch in his basement with two drinking glasses nearby. He left a note stating it was time to "face reality" and saying he would "love and will miss you all. Goodbye."
Jeshennia Bedoya-Lopez was 18 years old when she died in September 2022. Her parents requested that a music video titled "El Tiempo Sin Ti" be played in court as a tribute. During the playing of the video, Bedoya-Lopez's father broke down in tears and was accompanied out of court.
Louise Nunn, known as Deaf Immy on social media, lost her daughter Imogen to suicide in January 2023. Imogen Nunn had more than 780,000 followers on TikTok where she raised awareness about deaf community and mental health issues. Court documents show Imogen Nunn purchased a toxic salt from Law for $82.47 US.
The final paragraph of Louise Nunn's victim impact statement, which included direct accusations against Law, was redacted from the court reading. Assistant Crown Attorney Katie Doherty stated that prosecutors and defence agreed to redact passages going beyond permitted topics in victim impact statements.
While Law has pleaded guilty to 14 counts, a CBC News investigation previously found that he is suspected of being tied to at least 147 deaths worldwide.
