The sexual assault trial of Mike Smith, the actor best known for portraying Bubbles on the television series "Trailer Park Boys," was dismissed on Thursday in Dartmouth provincial court before proceedings began.

Judge Jill Hartlen dismissed the case after Crown lawyers stated they would not be presenting any evidence. Smith, 54, did not appear in court that day; his lawyer, Stan MacDonald, appeared on his behalf.

Smith was charged on October 2, 2025, with one count of sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident on December 30, 2017. He pleaded not guilty to the charge in February 2026. The scheduled three-day trial ended without hearing testimony.

Crown prosecutor Bryson McDonald stated that the decision to offer no evidence followed an ongoing assessment concluding there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.

The complainant, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, released a statement saying the trial was dismissed because she was unwilling to sacrifice her mental health by testifying. The Crown declined to confirm this specific reason, emphasizing instead that its decision was based on its assessment of the evidence.

MacDonald said his client was pleased the matter was behind him and ready to move forward. Following the dismissal, Trailer Park Boys Inc. issued a statement confirming that Smith will resume his responsibilities with the company.
