Federal and Provincial Governments Commit $300 Million to Shannon Park Housing Development in Halifax

The federal and provincial governments have pledged $300 million to build 930 housing units at the Shannon Park site in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson said the project on former military land will help address housing demand linked to rising defence spending, while community advocates are pushing for a larger share of affordable units.

Federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson made the announcement in Dartmouth, stating that the development helps address housing demand as defence spending climbs. He noted the project aims to build affordably for Canadian Armed Forces members and those supporting industry growth on the Nova Scotia coast.

Shannon Park is one of six direct-build sites across Canada on former military lands prioritized by Build Canada Homes. However, during the announcement, Minister Robertson was unsure of the latest timeline for the homes to be built.

As part of the community proposal, 100 public units have been announced. Community advocates argue that more affordable housing options are needed. Angela Bishop, CEO of the Housing Trust of Nova Scotia, stated it is important for community housing groups to get at least 20 per cent of the units to ensure they remain affordable.
