Four Killed in Shooting at Oregon Elementary School; Armed Community Member Stops Suspect

A 16-year-old suspect killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday before being shot dead by an armed community member. Two other victims remain in critical condition.

A 16-year-old male suspect killed four people — three children aged 5, 8, and 11, and one teacher — during a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon. Police have not named the suspect.

The first report of the attack came from a person whose car was fired upon by the suspect using a long gun. Police were alerted to the active shooter at 12:59 p.m. local time (PDT). Officers arrived at the scene approximately three minutes later, around 1:02 p.m., and confirmed the suspect was dead.

According to authorities, the shooter forced his way into the school by firing at locked doors. An armed community member pursued the suspect into the building and shot him dead. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek thanked the community member for heroically intervening.

Two additional victims, a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, were transported to the hospital in critical condition. Silver Rail Elementary School serves approximately 450 students and has more than 40 adult staff members.

Schools across Bend were closed on Friday following the incident.
