SiRT Investigates Police-Involved Shooting in Downtown Halifax
The Serious Incident Response Team is investigating a shooting that occurred on January 17, 2026, during an arrest attempt linked to two NSLC robberies. The suspect was hospitalized with serious injuries after threatening officers with a knife and failing to comply with commands.
The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has launched an investigation into a police-involved shooting that took place in downtown Halifax on the evening of January 17, 2026. Halifax Regional Police (HRP) contacted SiRT regarding the incident, which occurred during an arrest attempt connected to two separate robbery calls at NSLC locations earlier that afternoon.
According to HRP, officers responded to reports of robberies at two NSLC stores in the downtown area. An adult male suspected of committing both robberies was subsequently located on Quinpool Road. During the attempted arrest, the suspect threatened officers with a large knife and failed to comply with commands to drop the weapon.
Police deployed a taser against the suspect, but the device proved ineffective. A second officer then fired their service weapon, striking the male suspect. He was transported to the hospital where he remains with serious injuries.
