Stellantis to Idle Windsor Assembly Plant for Three Weeks Amid Tariffs and Stalled Union Talks

Stellantis announced a three-week idling of its Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario starting later this month, citing tariffs and consumer demand. The move follows a two-week layoff for the facility's more than 6,400 employees and comes as contract negotiations with Unifor remain stalled over the future of the Brampton plant.

Stellantis announced on Friday that it will idle its Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario for three weeks starting later this month, citing tariffs and consumer demand as the primary reasons for the downtime. The plant will be shut down during the weeks of Oct. 19, Oct. 26, and Nov. 2.

The Windsor facility employs more than 6,400 workers who were already laid off for the past two weeks and are set to return to work on Monday before the new shutdown takes effect. James Stewart, president of Unifor Local 444, stated that the new downtime is "something we didn't want to hear."

The announcement arrives as Stellantis and Unifor remain at a standstill in contract negotiations. The union's collective agreement with the automaker expired on Sept. 20. Talks have largely stalled due to an impasse over the future of the company's assembly plant in Brampton, Ont.
