18 Suspects in Haitian President Moïse Assassination Await Extradition to U.S.
Eighteen suspects arrested for the July 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse are awaiting extradition to Florida, where they will face trial. U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones announced that 30 individuals have been indicted in total, marking a significant step in the pursuit of accountability for the killing.
Eighteen suspects arrested in connection with the July 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse are currently awaiting extradition to the United States. According to U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Jason Reding Quiñones, these individuals will face trial in Florida.
Quiñones stated that a total of 30 people have been indicted in relation to the killing. FBI Special Agent in Charge Brett Skiles noted that multiple arrests occurred both within the United States and abroad on Sunday.
This development follows recent legal proceedings against other defendants in the case. In May, a jury in Florida convicted four men—Arcangel Pretel Ortiz, Antonio Intriago, Walter Veintemilla, and James Solages—for their roles in the assassination. Additionally, at least five other suspects have pleaded guilty and are serving life sentences.
The indictment process continues to unfold across borders. While some suspects are being transferred to the U.S., others remain in Haiti awaiting trial. These include more than a dozen Colombian soldiers and a former Haitian government official. The charges faced by the defendants include conspiracy to kill or kidnap and providing material support.
