$7.4 Billion QEII Halifax Infirmary Expansion on Schedule as Tower Reaches Ninth Level
Construction of the new 14-storey tower at the QEII Halifax Infirmary is progressing on schedule and within budget, with the facility expected to open to patients in fall 2031.
The $7.4 billion expansion of the QEII Halifax Infirmary in Nova Scotia remains on track and within budget, according to Randi Monroe, executive director in the Central Zone for Nova Scotia Health. The project, a partnership between the Government of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Health, and Build Nova Scotia, includes a 30-year maintenance agreement.

Construction on the new 14-storey tower began in 2025 and has currently reached the ninth level. Exterior construction is expected to be finished by the end of 2027, with interior work finalized by 2030. The new Halifax Infirmary tower is scheduled to open to patients in the fall of 2031.
The initiative was launched in 2016 after it was determined that the Victoria General Hospital infrastructure was too outdated to meet health-care needs. The expansion is designed to replace that aging infrastructure, increase capacity for healthcare services to accommodate population growth over the next 30 years, improve accessibility and specialized clinical services, and create a larger emergency department and intensive care unit.

Once completed, the new facility will feature 16 operating rooms and 216 beds, mostly housed in private rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The new emergency department will be almost double the size of the current one.
Project staff are also developing a 35-year plan, which will be submitted to the Department of Health and Wellness for review.
