The province of Nova Scotia has reached an agreement with Bay Ferries Ltd to continue operating the Yarmouth to Bar Harbor, Maine, ferry service from May to October in 2027. The decision follows a 10 per cent ridership increase in 2026, which saw 44,000 passengers use the route.

The announcement responds to growing demand on the route. In 2026, the ferry transported 44,000 people, representing a 10 per cent increase in ridership compared with 2025. Approximately 85 per cent of those passengers travelled from the United States.

Fred Tilley, Minister of Public Works, stated that continuing the ferry service uninterrupted next season is a success under difficult circumstances.

A 2026 study found that visitors arriving by the ferry tend to stay longer and spend more than average visitors to the region. An economic impact study further indicated that the service generates strong returns, with benefits extending to communities across Nova Scotia. These benefits include new revenue streams for rural communities and greater economic activity for local businesses.

According to the province, the ferry service also advances Nova Scotia’s buy-local objectives by supporting businesses within the province.
