An Iranian cargo ship was struck early Sunday off Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, an incident that has led to the postponement of planned regional discussions regarding maritime security. The attack resulted in one death and injuries to crew members, though reports differ on the exact number of wounded.
According to CBC News, the strike killed one person and wounded four others. China News Service reported one death and three injuries. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) monitor stated that a vessel was hit by a projectile while transiting the strait, causing a severe fire. It remains unclear if the UKMTO report refers to the same incident described by Iranian media sources.
In response to the attack, Iran postponed its plan to brief neighboring countries on efforts to manage shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi confirmed that the meeting in Oman was delayed "in the interests of consensus." Both nations agreed to the postponement at the request of some regional countries. This development follows a joint statement issued by Iran and Oman on August 25, which had proposed a safe maritime passage in the strait.
The Qeshm governor attributed the attack to a "terrorist enemy." While CBC News quoted this general description, China News Service specified that the governor blamed the "U.S. terrorist enemy." The U.S. military did not immediately comment on the incident. However, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran wants to make a deal and declined to confirm whether the United States struck the vessel.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded firmly, stating that Iran would not surrender and cannot be bullied into submission. The incident occurred amidst heightened tensions following recent actions by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea and ongoing conflicts involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel. Commercial ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been low amid these security concerns.
Qeshm Island is located approximately 22 kilometers from the port city of Bandar Abbas. Despite the rising tensions, diplomatic engagement continues elsewhere; President Pezeshkian recently met with UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed at the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
