Halifax Business Kaffika Turns Spent Coffee Grounds Into Cocoa Powder Alternative

Kaffika, a Halifax-based business launched by Rfine Biomass Solutions Inc., converts spent coffee grounds from industrial producers into a sustainable whole food ingredient that serves as an alternative to cocoa powder.

A Halifax-based business called Kaffika is converting spent coffee grounds into a sustainable whole food ingredient designed to serve as an alternative to cocoa powder. The initiative was launched by Rfine Biomass Solutions Inc.

Rfine works with large industrial producers whose spent coffee grounds were mostly destined for the landfill. By collecting and processing this material, the company reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills while providing a new food product.

The idea behind the business originated with Quinn Cavanagh of Rfine. Cavanagh was inspired to start the venture after observing during an internship the high volumes of spent coffee grounds produced by even a small team.
