RBC Blocks Third-Party AI Agents From Accessing Online Banking
Royal Bank of Canada announced it will block third-party personal artificial intelligence agents from directly accessing its digital properties, including online banking, citing concerns over client security, fraud prevention, and systemic financial risks.
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) announced on Tuesday that it will block third-party personal artificial intelligence agents from direct access to its digital properties, including online banking. The decision was communicated through a public statement and a LinkedIn post by Chief Executive Dave McKay.

The bank stated the move was made with the safety and security of clients and systems at the forefront. While acknowledging that AI agents can help consumers, McKay noted that their increasing autonomy poses high stakes regarding fraud, consumer harm, and broader financial system risks. He emphasized that trust is core to the relationship with clients and that nothing is more important than the security of client information.
The policy aims to mitigate risks related to fraud and consumer harm while protecting against risks rippling through the financial system. However, the restriction may cause potential disappointment for the small portion of clients currently using these tools.
